Obituary: John Anthony “Jack” Schuler, 89, of Hamden

Jack, an accomplished writer, editor and extraordinary minister, was known as a caring, gentle, kind and devoted family man.

HAMDEN, CT - (From Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home) John Anthony “Jack” Schuler, 89, passed away peacefully at his home on August 7, 2021.

He was born in Cincinnati, OH on September 5, 1931 to the late Albert and Loretta Hais Schuler. He later moved to Lynchburg, VA where he spent much of his youth.

Jack was married to the love of his life, Gail Lindsay Schuler, for 57 years. Hamden was home for just as many years. He attended Xavier University and the University of Virginia School of Law.

Jack was a writer for Echlin, Inc. for many years. He wrote for the Catholic Transcript, Birthright, and many other Catholic organizations.

He was also the Editor-in-Chief for Auto Merchandising News, a leading automotive trade publication.

A longtime active member of Saint Joan of Arc Church, Jack was an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist and a lector at mass. Jack also regularly read books to the blind for over 15 years.

Besides his wife, Jack will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Paul Schuler of Highlands Ranch, CO, David (Arline) Schuler of Ashland, MA, and Mark Schuler of Hamden; and his grandchildren, Grace, Jacob, Liam, and Adam Schuler.

Jack was a caring and gentle man who radiated warmth and kindness to all those who knew him. He treasured his beloved wife, Gail, and raised his three boys in their family home in the wonderful neighborhood of Academy Hill in Hamden. Jack adored spending time with his family.

He also loved his extensive library of books, his AM radio broadcasts, and Notre Dame football.

Friends are invited to celebrate Jack’s life during his Memorial Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 2819 Whitney Ave., Hamden on Saturday, August 14th at 10:00 a.m. follow by his interment in All Saints Cemetery.
