Quinnipiac Observes International Women's Day With Teach-In

The Teach-In will feature many faculty and student led discussions about a variety on women's issues in today's world.

From QU: Quinnipiac University will observe International Women’s Day and A Day Without a Woman with a teach-in from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, in The Piazza in the Carl Hansen Student Center at Quinnipiac, 275 Mount Carmel Ave. This event is free and open to the public.

Anat Biletzki, the Albert Schweitzer of Philosophy at Quinnipiac who is among the event organizers, said, “Continuing a tradition of teach-ins at Quinnipiac University, the theme of the event is ‘Empowerment and Vulnerability in the Experience of Women.’ Joining women in the U.S. and all over the world, we are making International Women’s Day – and these vital topics – a subject of conversation and solidarity on our campus and in Hamden.”

During the teach-in, several Quinnipiac faculty professors and students will present and lead discussions on a wide variety of sessions about women’s issues. Among the presenters and their topics are:

  • Monika Advocate, adjunct professor in international business, “Women in Our Families”
  • Ewa Callahan, associate professor of interactive media and design, “Empowerment through Film: Portrayals of Women in Indian Cinema”
  • Aileen Dever, professor of modern languages, “Rosalía de Castro’s Dark Shadow”
  • Mohammad Elahee, professor of international business, “Role of Women in Male Dominant Societies - Re-examining the Traditional Western Views”
  • Christine Kinealy, professor of history and director of Ireland’s Great Hunger Institute at Quinnipiac University, “The Declaration of the Rights of Women”
  • Linda Meyer, professor of law, “Women in Prison”
  • Ari Perez, assistant professor of civil engineering, “Being Civil: Women in Engineering”
  • Rebecca Rivera, professional in residence, School of Communications, “Big Change Happens One Microaction at a Time”
  • John Thomas, professor of law, “Kalamazoo Gals: A Story of the Extraordinary Women and Gibson’s ‘Banner’ Guitars of WWII”
  • Sasha Turner, associate professor of history, “Slavery, Freedom, and Motherhood”

In addition, the event will feature student information booths and a photography showcase by Maher Mahmoud, an Iraqi refugee photographer from New Haven.

A Day Without a Woman has been organized for women and their allies to act together for equity, justice and the human rights of women and all gender-oppressed people through a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity. For more information, call 203-582-8652.
