2 Taken To Hospital After Dramatic Hartford Apartment Building Fire: HFD

The Hartford Fire Department had to use a long ladder to rescue a victim from the burning building's third floor.

HARTFORD, CT — A serious blaze at a Wethersfield Avenue apartment building in Hartford Thursday morning sent two to the hospital and required a dramatic ladder rescue from the third floor.

According to the Hartford Fire Department, the two-alarm fire was at 271 Wethersfield Ave. at about 9:33 a.m. Thursday.

According to the American Red Cross, 10 families – 18 adults and seven children — were impacted by the fire and are getting assistance.

The fire was in a three-story brick apartment building on Wethersfield Avenue, where crews encountered heavy smoke and fire extending from the basement to the upper floors.

The HFD said one adult male was rescued via ladder from the third floor.

In total, two individuals were transported to the hospital: one for possible smoke inhalation and one for anxiety related to the incident, the HFD said.

"Thanks to quick action by firefighters, the fire was knocked down and brought under control," wrote the HFD in a statement.

The Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.

The HFD's Special Services Unit and the American Red Cross are assisting displaced residents.
