Hartford Nonprofit Chosen For Big Y's 'Community Bag' Program
The organization will receive $1 for every $2.50 reusable Big Y Community Bag purchased at the grocer's West Hartford store.
HARTFORD, CT — Hartford-based nonprofit Harc, Inc. will receive $1 from each purchase of select reusable bags bought from the West Hartford Big Y, the nonprofit announced.
Harc, Inc. was chosen as the latest beneficiary of Big Y's "Community Bag and Giving Tag Program," officials said, meaning the nonprofit can receive a $1 donation for every $2.50 reusable Big Y Community Bag purchased at the West Hartford location (772 North Main St.) in June.
Big Y store leadership chose Harc as the benefiting nonprofit. The organization helps people with intellectual and related disabilities (and their families) lead quality, inclusive and dignified lives, officials said.

"We are thrilled to participate in this innovative program that makes it easy for shoppers to give back to local nonprofits while actively reducing plastics in the environment," Dan McLaughlin, interim CEO and chief financial officer of Harc, said in a statement. "We appreciate the community support in this important initiative to make a difference."
According to Big Y's website, through the program shoppers can choose a local nonprofit to donate $1 of their purchase to within seven days of buying a reusable "Community Bag" with a giving tag attached to it.

If they don't choose an organization, the money will be directed to the nonprofit store leadership selected for the month — in this case, Harc.
