"Agent Mark Watson" of IRS Scam-Calling Ledyard Homes
The Ledyard Police Department is warning residents to be wary of scams via telephone or email.

Ledyard residents are reporting calls from individuals posing as the IRS, according to the Ledyard Police Department.
"The caller identifies himself as 'Agent Mark Watson of the IRS Department' and speaks with an accent," police said. "He tells the person there is a warrant for their arrest and their address is under federal investigation."
This type of call and language is consistent with the many versions of the IRS scam. Police said scam calls may contain the following:
- Calls to demand immediate payment over the phone, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you several bills
- Calls or emails to verify your identity by asking for personal and financial information
- A demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe
- Requiring you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card
- Asking for credit or debit card numbers over the phone or email
- Threatening to immediately bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying
