Civil Air Patrol to perform

There is no better way to spend a day with your favorite children than to attend the Thames West Auxiliary Child and Family Agency’s Touch-A-Truck on Saturday, May 21, 2022, from 9 am to 2pm at McCook Point Park in Niantic. Children will have fun exploring the many trucks, eating breakfast, lunch, or snacks under the tent, watching the landing of LIFE STAR, and enjoying a ride on the Roaming Railroad.

In addition, at 1 p.m., Cadets from the Civil Air Patrol Thames River Composite Squadron Groton, CT, will be conducting a simulated rescue search on the field where LIFE STAR will have landed in the morning. The Ground Team will conduct an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) locating exercise. This will be a demonstration of how the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) locates an emergency radio beacon which may be on a downed aircraft, boat in distress or lost person. A team of Cadets from the Thames River Composite Squadron will use a hand-held radio direction finder to track down the location of a signal being beamed from an ELT.

The Ground Team has had specialized training in radio communications, first aid and field craft which develop skills to provide assistance in both a rustic, urban or maritime environment. Their searches are activated by local, state or national agencies that require assistance and supported by both ground vehicles and aircraft. They also serve in response to post disaster relief efforts.
