Man Charged With Assaulting Ledyard Cops: Police

The officers were injured during a motor vehicle stop last week, according to police.

LEDYARD, CT — A Gales Ferry man is accused of assaulting police officers who stopped him for speeding earlier this month.

Anthony Allaire, 45, of 182 Whalehead Rd., was charged on a warrant Wednesday with assault on a police officer, interfering with police, speeding, disobeying an officer’s signal, and having a weapon in a motor vehicle.

The charges stem from an incident on May 7 at 5:46 a.m., when police attempted to stop Allaire’s vehicle for speeding on Sandy Hollow Road, according to police.

Allaire did not initially stop, but he eventually pulled over on Rte. 117 at Gales Ferry Road, police said.

Allaire got out of his vehicle and refused to comply with police commands, according to police. Police tried to take him into custody, and they said Allaire did not cooperate when officers tried to handcuff him. A struggle ensued in a grassy area near the roadway, and police were able to handcuff him, police said. The two officers sustained minor injuries in the scuffle, police said.

After Allaire was in custody, officers saw Allaire was exhibiting signs of medical distress, so they summoned emergency medical personnel to the scene. Allaire was transported to an area hospital, where he was treated and later released, police said.

Allaire is due to appear in Superior Court in New London on May 28.
