College Student From CT Killed Trying To Enter Wrong Home: Police

The 20-year-old from Madison was shot and killed over the weekend in Columbia, South Carolina, where he was attending college, reports said.

COLUMBIA, SC — A 20-year-old from Connecticut attending college in South Carolina was shot and killed over the weekend in Columbia after he was apparently mistaken for a burglar, according to police.

Nicholas Anthony Donofrio was from Madison, according to WFSB, and was a student at the University of South Carolina, police said.

Officers responded around 2 a.m. Saturday to the 500 block of South Holly Street for a report of a residential burglary that was upgraded to a shots fired call, according to police. When they arrived, they found Donofrio dead on the front porch with a gunshot wound to his upper body, police said.

Donofrio lived on South Holly Street and appeared to have been trying to enter the wrong home when he was shot, according to police.

The University of South Carolina is offering resources and support to affected community members, the school said in a statement to WFSB.

Donofrio's parents told WTNH News 8 that their son was “a great son, loving, compassionate, all the traits you would want in a son.” He was also a Daniel Hand High School graduate and a sports star, News 8 reported.
