Typically, police canines retire by age nine but not Gwen who has continued working until the age of 14.

MADISON, CT — Madison Police Department's K-9 Gwen is hanging up her badge after a lengthy career in law enforcement, the Madison Source reports. Gwen, a black Labrador, is 14 year-old and typically police dogs retire by age 10 but not Gwen.

Gwen came to Madison in 2009 and has specialized in narcotics detection. Gwen has helped the Madison Police Department sniff out some major drug busts including cocaine, heroin and marijuana valued at more than $100,000, the Madison Source reports.

Gwen has also assisted in high-profile drug trafficking cases all over Connecticut with her partner, Lt. Richard Perron, who said Gwen never alerted falsely and whenever she did alert, it meant there were drugs present. The Police Department is planning to bring in a new canine.
