MADISON, CT — New details have been released in an armed kidnapping from Rhode Island that ended with the arrest of a Providence man early Thursday at the Madison rest area on I-95, according to authorities.

Connecticut State Police said they located a gray Jeep with Rhode Island plates at the southbound rest area in Madison after receiving information about a possible kidnapping suspect. The vehicle had been the subject of a "be on the lookout" alert issued around 1:55 a.m. by Troop F in Westbrook.

A trooper found the vehicle and identified the driver as Angel Martinez, 23, of Providence. A female passenger in the Jeep was confirmed to be the reported kidnapping victim, state police said.

During the stop, Martinez told troopers there was a firearm in a bag on the floor behind the front passenger seat. A loaded 9mm handgun was recovered, state police said. The firearm was visible in a case, and investigators later determined Martinez did not have a valid permit to carry it.

Martinez was arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a permit and illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle. He is being held in lieu of bail of $100,000 bond and scheduled to appear in New Haven Superior Court on June 5.

The Providence Police Department, which is investigating the kidnapping, secured an extraditable felony arrest warrant. At approximately 10:36 a.m., Martinez was arrested again at the courthouse on a fugitive from justice charge. He is being held in lieu of a $250,000 bond in that case, and was set to appear in court at a later date.
