NY Man Accused Of Leading CT State Police On Foot Chase In Madison

The incident, which resulted in the suspect's arrest, occurred Monday night, according to authorities.

MADISON, CT — A 28-year-old Brooklyn, New York man was arrested by Connecticut State Police on Monday night, after leading troopers on a foot chase following a traffic stop in Madison, according to authorities.

Roger Anthony Grant was charged with multiple violations following the 11:35 p.m. incident, which occurred on I-95 near exit 62, the Hammonasset State Park exit in Madison.

According to state police, Grant was driving a black Volkswagen Jetta southbound in the left lane on I-95, but was "failing to maintain [his] lane, speeding up and slowing down." The erratic driving was impeding traffic flow, authorities said.

A trooper, who witnessed how Grant was driving, attempted to pull him over.

"The operator of the Volkswagen initially reduced their speed and maneuvered into the right lane before merging back into the left lane, eventually stopping in the area of exit 62 within the left shoulder, partially in the left travel lane, thus creating a hazard," state police wrote in a release.

Once the car pulled over, the trooper saw Grant, who had been driving, switch seats with the passenger, and the two of them were seen reaching in the back seat.

"Based upon the furtive movements observed, the Trooper exited their cruiser and positioned themselves at the rear of their cruiser and requested additional Troopers respond and assist," state police said. "From this position, the Trooper issued verbal directives to the front seat occupants to face forward and place their hands on the dashboard, but they refused to comply."

Additional troopers arrived at the scene, and saw that an infant was in the rear seat in a car seat. The troopers repeatedly told Grant and the female passenger, who was in the driver's seat, to place their hands on the dashboard, but the two refused.

The troopers got Grant to roll down the passenger window, but when they opened the car door, he ran away. Troopers were able to capture him, but he resisted arrest before being handcuffed.

Once in custody, Grant was charged with the following:

  • Failure to drive in proper lane
  • Improper parking on a highway
  • Risk of injury to a child
  • Reckless endangerment, 2nd degree
  • Interfering with an officer

Grant was released after posting a $50,000 cash/surety bond, and is scheduled to be arraigned in New Haven Superior Court on Oct. 15.

Additionally, the state Department of Children and Families was notified of the incident, according to state police.
