Summertime Sondheim Returns This Month

Madison Lyric Stage has announced that the next installment in its summer concert series, Sondheim in the Barn Goes to Church, will be held on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Society (SUUS) located at 297 Boston Post Road. 

Many people will remember Sondheim in the Barn from last summer when it was performed to sold-out audiences in an 1800s barn in Madison. As the barn requires some repair following the winter snowstorm, SUUS very graciously opened its doors. 

Selections will be performed from A Little Night Music, Company, Follies, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, and others.  The cast includes Marc Deaton, Kerry Flanagan, Barbara Hentschel, John Johmann, Emily Langford Johnson, Matt Johnson, Lara Morton and Peter Sonenstein. Vic Johnson will accompany at the piano. 

Suggested donation is $20.  Refreshments will be available from Liana’s Table Catering. 

“We are excited to bring this concert back to Madison for the second time,” said Marc Deaton, artistic director of Madison Lyric Stage.  “Last summer we could only accommodate a limited number of people in the barn and had to turn away many people who wanted to attend.  This year’s concert features some new material with the same professional cast, including an international opera tenor, a soprano who has sung with New York City Opera, and three alumni of the Actor’s Studio in New York.  It is sure to be an evening of terrific entertainment and we are delighted to be able to perform at SUUS.”

Madison Lyric Stage’s season will culminate on Saturday, August 24 at 7:00 p.m. with a gala dinner and concert – From Berlin to Vienna. The evening will feature a full gourmet buffet dinner presented by Liana’s Table Catering served al fresco on the lovely grounds of SUUS. The evening will include professional entertainment, including German opera, operetta and musical theater highlights.  Musical selections will be presented from Cabaret, Three-Penny Opera, Die Fledermaus, The Merry Widow, Tannhäuser and Die Walküre among others.  Tickets are $75 per person or $140 per couple. 

Madison Lyric Stage is a new ensemble repertory arts organization on the Connecticut Shoreline. Its mission is to bring the Shoreline professional performances of song, theater, dance, poetry and other artistic expressions.  It has produced several successful arts events to date: The Swan Knight at Yale’s Off-Broadway Theater in March 2012, Sondheim in the Barn in July 2012, and Bella Italia! in August 2012, among others.
