Town: West Wharf Repairs Completed, "Open And Better Than Ever"

West Wharf – Open And Better than Ever

It was almost two years ago that Topical Storm Irene destroyed Madison’s West Wharf. Today, West Wharf reopens even better than ever!  West Wharf was just one of the many reconstruction projects resulting from our recent storms, including urgent repairs to Middle Beach Road and the Surf Club sea wall.  Yet, despite these many projects work on West Wharf is now complete, and it is in better shape than at least before Hurricane Gloria in 1985.

The reconstruction included rebuilding the stone wharf from the rubble left over from Irene, reconstructing the stone wall, resurfacing the walkway, bringing back the historic timber edging, and, perhaps most importantly, reinforcing the stone revetments on the water side to better protect the wharf in future storms.

“It took a little longer than we had hoped, but we wanted to get the best job we could while still being mindful of controlling costs,” said First Selectman Fillmore McPherson.  “Our end result it is a good restoration that hopefully will hold up for many years to come.”

The total project cost was $435 thousand, with up to 75% potentially being reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
