MANCHESTER, CT — Several cats were killed in a raging fire at a home in a Manchester historic district early Sunday morning, fire officials said.

The fire at 139 Hartford Turnpike broke out just before 1 a.m.

Firefighters encountered heavy flames across the front of the 6,000-square-foot home. All seven Manchester companies, plus a crew from East Hartford responded to the scene.

The fire was brought under control in approximately 40 minutes, officials said.

Two adult residents were unhurt and were being cared for by the American Red Cross.

"Regrettably, several cats were found deceased," fire officials said.

The house is presently uninhabitable, and the Manchester Fire Marshal's office is conducting an investigation for the fire's origin and cause.
