Large Brush Fire Spreads From Highway To Homes In Manchester

Firefighters saved homes from a large brush fire that covered several acres in Manchester Tuesday night.

MANCHESTER, CT — A large brush fire broke out in Manchester Tuesday night.

The fire broke out at 7:25 p.m. near the Exit 63 westbound interchange on Interstate 84, officials said.

Firefighters encountered several large patches of flames totaling several acres along the north side of the highway. The fire was moving quickly and spread over a ridge and threatened several properties on Bryan Drive, officials said. The Manchester Fire department responded with six companies — two directly to the properties on Bryan Drive and the rest to the highway itself. Additional water was needed and crews from Vernon, Tolland and Ellington rushed to the scene, officials said

On Bryan Drive, the fire spread to within 15 feet of homes, but no damage was sustained, officials said.

It took about 90 minutes to bring the fire under control and "thoroughly overhaul" the area, officials said.

No injuries were reported.

The incident is under investigation by the Manchester Fire Marshal's Office.
