Manchester Closings Due to Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy isn't even here yet, but already she has caused a number of businesses, schools and other organizations around Manchester to close in anticipation of what Gov. Dannel P. Malloy warns could be a catastrophic storm. 

Manchester Community College, Howell Cheney Technical High School and East Catholic High School were all closed Monday, and have all announced that they will be closed on Tuesday due to Hurricane Sandy as well. Manchester public schools were also closed Monday, but as of 3 p.m. no decision on their status for Tuesday had been reached. 

The Shoppes at Buckland Hills mall also closed at noon on Monday. 

Although all Town of Manchester offices were open Monday, and General Manager Scott Shanley said he foresaw them being open on Tuesday as well. 

"The majority of our employees are, in one way or another, engaged in emergency response operations," Shanley said. 

The town has no plans to open a shelter as of Monday afternoon, but Shanley said that could change by early Tuesday morning depending on the severity of the storm and its impact on power in town. 

If Manchester residents need shelter, they are encouraged to go to the regional shelter at Vernon Center Middle School, which will begin service meals on Monday. The shelter is located at 777 Hartford Turnpike in Vernon and pets are allowed if they remain caged. 

The Manchester Senior Center was also closed Monday due to the storm. 

All municipal meetings scheduled for Monday are cancelled. 

Manchester's public libraries will also be closing at 5 p.m. on Monday. 

All Parks and Recreation Department facilities and programs are closed for Monday as well.
