Manchester Mourning Loss Of Retired Chief Of Police
A respected retired member of the Manchester Police Department has died.

MANCHESTER, CT — Manchester has lost a cherished retired police officer.
With "heavy hearts" Manchester Police Department officials Monday announced the passing of retired chief Gerald Aponte.
"Chief Aponte brought a lifetime of dedication and leadership to law enforcement," local police officials said.

Aponte began his career in 1966 in North Arlington, NJ, where he rose to the rank of chief in 1986. In 1990, he became the chief of police in Rolling Meadows, IL, and assumed the additional role of city manager in 1995.
In 1998, Aponte came to Manchester and made a significant impact.

"For the next five years, he led our department with professionalism, compassion, and vision," local police officials said.
"He will be remembered for his deep care for the men and women of this department, his commitment to community policing, and his pivotal role in launching the Manchester Citizen Police Academy. This program remains one of our most impactful community initiatives to this day.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to Chief Aponte’s family, friends, and colleagues. Thank you, Chief, for your lifelong service to public safety and for the lasting legacy you’ve left in Manchester."
