Second Annual Charity Baseball Tournament to Benefit Fallen Manchester High Student
The second annual Jonathan Scribner Memorial Baseball Tournament will begin Thursday at Mt. Nebo Park.
It may be more than a year since , but his friends, family and neighbors are hoping to keep his memory alive by continuing the charity baseball tournament that was founded last summer as a way to honor Scribner and raise money for his family.Â
The Second Annual will be held this Thursday, Aug. 9, through Sunday, Aug. 12, at Mt. Nebo Park.Â
Scribner, who played in the town's youth baseball leagues, died last summer in a tragic dirt bike accident while preparing to enter his senior year at Manchester High School.Â

As a way to honor his memory, and to raise funds for the Scribner family, Joe DeDominicis, a former coach of Scribner’s in the town’s Babe Ruth League, organized a charity baseball tournament and hitting competition last year.Â
This year, DeDominicis decided to continue and expand the tournament, and says he hopes to continue to grow it in successive years as long as the interest and enthusiasm remains strong.Â

"We're going to try and do it annually depending on how easy or how hard it might be as kids get older," DeDominicis told Patch. "I will say the reaction was just as quick and just as well as last year. As soon as people heard about the tournament, they wanted to play. I was getting phone calls left and right."Â
DeDominicis said that this year's event is already booked. He has eight teams competing in the tournament itself, at a $20 entry fee per player, and more than 100 people booked in a hitting competition Saturday morning.Â
DeDominicis said he has also convinced a number of local businesses - including Modell's, the Stone and Paddle, Randy's Wooster Street Pizza and several others - to donate goods and services to the tournament.Â
The schedule for the tournament includes:Â
- A 7 p.m. game on Thursday. - A game at 5:45 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday.Â
- A hitting competition Saturday morning beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by a small ceremony honoring Scribner.Â
- Games at 1 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday.Â
- And the championship game at 4 p.m. on Sunday.Â
All games will be held at on Spring Street.Â
DeDominicis said that all proceeds this year will be donated to Manchester Scholarship Foundation under Scribner's name.Â
