That Loud Exploding Noise? If It's in Manchester in September, It's Probably Intentional

If you hear loud explosions in the Manchester area from Sept. 10 until the end of the month between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., you probably shouldn't panic. 

That's because the noise is likely caused by a transmission project Connecticut Light & Power is working on in the Manchester area using "imploding connector technology." The project, which is in its second and final stage, is taking place on Olcott Street in Manchester near the Burnham Street Extension.

The manufacturer involved with the project has warned that the sound of the implosions may carry up to five miles, so officials and the general public in South Windsor, Glastonbury and East Hartford have also been notified of the project. Twelve implosions over a three week period are expected in that area between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Starting Sept. 10. 

CL&P customers in all affected towns will be notified by autodialer as well as advertisements running in the local newspapers.

According to CL&P, the project "replaces critical connectors that are about 40 years old with a new technology that vastly improves the reliability of the transmission system. This is important maintenance that will ensure reliability of our lines for years to come."
