Driver Killed In Head-On Crash Into Bridge Abutment: Meriden Police

A driver was killed and two others were hospitalized after crashing into an Amtrak train bridge abutment in Meriden, according to police.

MERIDEN, CT — A driver was killed and two others were hospitalized after a vehicle crashed head-on with the Amtrak train bridge abutment on South Colony Road in Meriden early Friday morning, according to police.

Police responded around 1:45 a.m. to the area of South Colony Road and Powers Drive on the report of a crash, according to Sgt. Michael Boothroyd.

Boothroyd said the preliminary investigation indicates that the incident involved a single vehicle—a 2007 Honda Accord—that collided head-on with the Amtrak train bridge abutment while traveling north on South Colony Road.

Three people were inside the vehicle. The two passengers were hospitalized with injuries that weren’t life-threatening, according to Boothroyd.

Boothroyd said the driver, a 20-year-old man, died from his injuries at the hospital.

The driver's family has been notified and is cooperating with the investigation, according to Boothroyd.

“Following the incident, the bridge and train tracks were thoroughly inspected and deemed safe for roadway traffic and train services,” Boothroyd wrote in a news release.

The roadway was reopened around 5:45 a.m.

The Meriden Police Accident Reconstruction Unit is actively investigating the collision, according to Boothroyd.
