Meriden Residents Among State's Top Math Students

Meriden residents Adam Wiernasz and Austin Sokol, as well as classmate Yatong Fan recently attend the 11th Annual Travelers High School Actuarial and Analytics Event held on Friday, March 1 at the Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford, CT.

These three St. Paul Catholic High School (Bristol) students, chaperoned by math teacher Mary Clarke, joined other top math students from high schools across the state to learn about the field of Actuary Science.

This is a career that is exciting, challenging, and financially rewarding. The fields of Actuaries and Analytics require extremely strong math and statistical skills. The full day event commenced with an introduction by a Travelers Executive and other managers within the Analytics Leadership and Development Program (AALDP) at Travelers.

A lesson was presented by Professor Jim Trimble, director of the Actuarial Science Program at UCONN, a leader in Actuarial Science studies. Students were then given the opportunity to job shadow Actuarial and Analytics employees to learn what is involved in their careers and what education was necessary for their career choice.

Each student also was placed on a team and competed in a math game that was based upon the television series, “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.” The students from SPCHS helped their team win this math challenge!

Students ate lunch with members of the Travelers Actuarial Community and the day concluded with a panel discussion. Overall, it was an extremely interesting and informative day that provided the students with information about an area of study they may wish to consider for college.

Wiernasz and Sokol are both juniors at the school.
