Police: Meriden Man Caught in Lie, Facing Charges in Multiple Cases
A Meriden man is facing a series of charges after police said he first gave a fake name when stopped for acting suspiciously and was discovered to be lying – and wanted on other cases – when a different name was found on a card in his wallet.

A Bunker Avenue man is facing a slew of charges from a series of crimes after police said he was acting suspiciously and gave an officer a fake name before the officer discovered his true identity and several warrants for his arrest.
Donald Poteat, of 104 Bunker Ave., was taken into custody at the intersection of Warren Street and Park Avenue after an officer in the area found him acting suspiciously, Det. Lt. Mark Walerysiak said Monday.
“He gave a fake name saying that he was someone else and continued to act suspiciously,” Walerysiak said. “When officer found a card that fell out of his wallet with a different name on it, he ran it and found he was wanted in several cases.”
Poteat, 27, was attempting to hide his identity to avoid being arrested on several arrests including a drug case in January and domestic charges including burglary in early May.
He was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Monday and remains in custody in lieu of more than $50,000 in bonds, court officials said Monday afternoon. He is facing charges of sale of a controlled substance, sale of a controlled substance in a school zone, conspiracy to sell a controlled substance, third-degree burglary, disorderly conduct and interfering with police in the three cases.
In January, police said he and another man were involved in a series of drug deals in the community that involved the sale of marijuana. Poteat was identified after an investigation by the crime suppression unit.
Walersyiak said he was also wanted for an incident on May 3 where Poteat allegedly kicked down a locked door to enter the home of his ex-girlfriend, breaking various items including a large television and other things in her living room.
The ex-girlfriend called police, according to the report, but Poteat took off before officers arrived.
Poteat is due back in court in late June and could enter a plea to the charges at that time.
