Connecticut Blood Center (CTBC) and Connecticut Children’s are once again teaming up to encourage the community to donate blood or platelets in April. “We look forward to another year of our ‘Dollar a Donor’ program” said Jonathan DeCasanova, Account Manager for Connecticut Blood Center. “This annual effort provides the community the ability to support both the need for blood donations and their local children’s hospital.”
“The need for blood is constant. No one knows that better than the children and families who are supported and cared for by Connecticut Children’s” said Caitlin Grimaldi-Flick, marketing and communications manager with Connecticut Blood Center. “It takes less than an hour of your time to donate but these products can be life changing for these patients.”
The partnership comes on the heels of CTBC declaring its first blood emergency of 2023. Inventory remains below ideal levels both locally and nationally. It’s essential that regular, lapsed and first time donors book an appointment to help build up a stable supply. On average, CTBC along with its sister division Rhode Island Blood Center (RIBC) needs to collect 250 donations a day to help the patients and hospitals we service.

One of the most common needs for blood and platelets is to help cancer patients through their treatments. In fact, on average pediatric patients use 1,800 units of blood daily across the United States, Connecticut Children’s is there to support the children with cancer and families from the time of diagnosis into recovery and beyond.
Grimaldi-Flick added, “By booking an appointment, you will help play a role in building a diverse blood supply. Donors can also help Connecticut Children’s in their mission to help local families through this promotion. It’s a win-win for two community based organizations.”
