Man Dies After Jumping Into Connecticut River In Middletown: Police

MIDDLETOWN, CT — A man died shortly after jumping into the Connecticut River in Middletown late Monday morning, police said.

The incident unraveled at about 10 a.m., police said.

According to an incident report, Middletown police responded to Harbor Park to check on the wellbeing of a man who was near the edge of the Connecticut River. As they attempted to approach the man, officers observed him intentionally jump into the river, according to an incident report.

Middletown Fire personnel were called to conduct a water rescue. The man was located by a fire rescue crew a short time later, but was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to an incident report.

Police said the investigation is considered active and the man's name is not being immediately released.

In addition to Middletown firefighters, assistance was provided by dive teams from the South Fire District and the Portland Fire Department.

It's the second rescue operation near the park and river in just a few days. On Oct. 22, authorities located someone who jumped from the Arrigoni Bridge. A passing motorist said that a man had "intentionally" jumped from the span.

The man was located near the rail yard near the bridge and river and taken to an area hospital with multiple serious injuries, police said.
