Middletown Schools Will Reopen Tuesday, Feb. 19

The district decided to hold classes on what was supposed to be a holiday after school was canceled for more than a week, largely because of the blizzard.

Middletown students will return to school on Tuesday, Feb. 19, ending a more than week-long break largely resulting from a blizzard that struck the state on Feb. 8.

School officials made the decision to reopen schools after a survey of parents showed overwhelming support for it, according to the Hartford Courant.

"There was an overwhelmingly favorable response to the survey with 88 [percent] of the respondents preferring to return to school rather than to take a day away from the April vacation," School Superintendent Patricia Charles said in an email Friday morning, the Courant reports. "Hopefully, with the warmer temperatures and people having the weekend to shovel, sidewalks will be cleared so students do not have to walk in the road."

Friday was a district-wide professional development day and today is President's Day, meaning classe were closed for both days. That leaves Tuesday, Feb. 19, which was originally scheduled as a holiday, up for cancellation if the district wants to keep the week-long April vacation intact.
