MILFORD, CT — Susan Reed says words can't describe how proud she is that her mother, Marti Reed, owner and operator of The Canvas Patch in downtown Milford, has reached 40 years in business.
"I am very proud of my Mom for reaching this milestone. Her store has become an institution in Milford and my Mom is known and loved everywhere she goes around town. It hasn’t always been easy, but Mom is one tough cookie and I really admire her for staying successful, it’s truly inspiring!" Susan Reed said of her mother.
The Canvas Patch is celebrating 40 years on the Milford Green. Come enjoy champagne and hors d’oevres with Marti on her anniversary. Marti would love to show her appreciation for the many years of support she has received from our Milford community, her daughter said.

"By land or by sea, just steps away from Milford Harbor and the picturesque Milford Green, The Canvas Patch offers the finest in gift ideas, collectibles and accessories. The Canvas Patch carries a wide selection of Milford memorabilia. These items make a terrific addition to your home or office, and a meaningful reminder of the Milford spirit to family and friends who may have moved from the area," Susan Reed said.
"When The Canvas Patch opened its doors in 1977, it was located at 28 River St. Marti ran the store as her four children went from childhood to adolescence and adulthood, and one or more of her kids could be found after school hours behind the counter doing homework or even making sales. As years passed, the location would see grandchildren crawling about and browsing the lower shelves," Susan Reed said.

Tragedy struck in the year 2000 and a fire destroyed her business and the entire building. Along with The Canvas Patch, one the many incarnations of Wanda’s Sugar Shack and Retroactive, a vintage clothing store, were all lost in the fire. A family living in the apartment above was also displaced, but fortunately no one was harmed. The building had to be torn down and is now an empty lot to this day, but Marti persevered and rose like a phoenix to re-open at her current location, 35 River St..
"Her charming and eclectic taste is reflected in the many unique and beautiful items found in the store. For over 50 years, Marti has been an enthusiastic Milford supporter. Her commitment to the community and downtown Milford has contributed to the reputation and success of The Canvas Patch over the years," Susan Reed said.
