Community Rallies To Honor Milford Fire Victim's Memory

A man died in a fire in Milford earlier this month. The victim is being remembered as a "kind soul who touched the lives of so many."

MILFORD, CT — The community has rallied to aid a family after a man died in a fire in Milford earlier this month.

Joseph Kane, 57, died following a fire in a homeless encampment behind Lowe's at 311 Old Gate Lane on Aug. 15, police said.

Police said the case is "currently being treated as an active criminal investigation." No arrests have been made.

A fundraiser established in Kane's memory has generated more than $10,000. The GoFundMe was started by Shirley Prendergast, a lifelong family friend of Kane's.

"He was a kind soul who touched the lives of so many, always ready for an adventure, thoughtful in his ways, and giving of himself to others," she wrote. "He created countless lifelong memories with his friends and family, and his absence leaves an immeasurable void."

The fundraiser is to help cover Joe’s memorial service expenses. As of Tuesday morning, 104 people have donated to the cause.
