Friends of Milford Library Honors High School Students

Seven high school students were honored at the third annual High School Book Awards and Scholarship Ceremony at Friends of Milford Library.

From The Friends of Milford Library:The Friends of the Milford Library honored seven local high school students Thursday night at the third annual High School Book Awards and Scholarship Ceremony.

Francesca Faura, a senior at Joseph A. Foran High School, and Kavitha Mohanarajan, a member of the Class of 2017 at Jonathan Law High School, were each presented a scholarship by the Friends. Faura will attend the University of Bridgeport in the fall and Mohanarajan will attend the University of Connecticut.

Five juniors were presented with signed copies of "Only in Milford,'' a photographic history of the city, by author Deforest W. Smith, and the students each choose a book that will be donated by the Friends' to the students' high school library in honor of the award winners.

Domenick Buccitti of Jonathan Law selected a biography of Florence Nightingale for his school's library, noting that he plans a career in pharmacy and that his mother is a nurse.

Sean Rescsanski of Platt Technical High School chose Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky to be presented by the Friends on his behalf.

"I chose it because it was the first classical literature I read and it got me into that genre,'' the Platt Tech student said.

Chania Chaisson-Fortin of Foran High chose Tithe by Holly Black and Lauralton Hall student Hannah Williams selected The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarnation in the Age Of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander.

Eric Silva, the honoree from The Academy, chose The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.

Dr. Anne Bolin, president of the Friends of the Milford Library, presented the awards and scholarships. Dr. Elizabeth Feser, the superintendent of schools, was the keynote speaker.

The honorees were chosen for their civic activities, academic achievements and their love of reading, awards committee chairwoman Margaret Bolger said.
