Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued For Southern CT Today: Here's What To Know

It's late February, and we're talking thunderstorms, 50 mph wind gusts and also the chance of some icy conditions too, all within 24 hours.

SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT — The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for all of southern Connecticut for the chance of "strong to locally damaging winds" on Wednesday night.

Winds could gust up to 50 mph, mainly tonight, and could lead to some power outages, according to the National Weather Service.

Thunderstorms are also possible tonight during the heavier rain showers. And the temperatures will free-fall late tonight, which could lead to "possible icy patches" on Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

"The strongest wind speeds are expected immediately ahead of, and again in the wake of the cold frontal passage, between 7 PM this evening and 3 AM Thursday. Strong winds will blow down scattered tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. A few trees and power lines could be downed. Power outages are possible," the weather service said.


Fairfield, New Haven and Middlesex County: A wind advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday.

"Winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 to 50 mph expected. Wind direction southwest late this afternoon becoming west tonight and then northwest late tonight into early Thursday morning."


New London County: A wind advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday. "Winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected. Wind direction southwest today becoming west tonight and then northwest late tonight into early Thursday morning."


Storm details and the weekend forecast take a turn for the worse in southern Connecticut

Rain is forecast to be off-and-on during the day on Wednesday with strong wind gusts. Steadier rain is forecast tonight and there is a chance of a thunderstorm tonight too, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will fall from the mid to upper 50s during the day on Wednesday to the 20s at night. Winds could gust to 50 mph late tonight.

On Thursday, it will feel like 20 degrees with the wind chill factor, according to the weather service. And the weekend weather forecast has taken a turn for the worse as now cloudy skies are forecast and there is a chance of rain on both Saturday and Sunday and the rain chance extends to Monday and Tuesday of next week.

At least it will be warmer with temperatures in the 50s from Saturday through Tuesday.
