MILFORD, CT — The Milford Fire Marshal Division said an individual has identified themselves as an inspector with the Milford Fire Department to inspect a premise.

Tim Suden, Deputy Fire Marshal and spokesperson for Fire Marshal Division, said the individual has now targeted single-family homes and has produced handwritten invoices to the homeowners within five minutes, then informed the homeowner that the cost of the inspection was to be paid in cash at that time.

After showing the invoice, the inspector impersonator would tell the homeowners they will return to perform the necessary repair or corrections they have cited, Suden said.

Suden said the Fire Marshal Division is still determining whether the homeowners have paid the individual.

Suden said the Milford Fire Marshal Division does not sub-contract anyone or any company to perform inspections of other businesses, and the division does not have jurisdiction over one or two family dwellings.

If an individual approaches your business or your home without having scheduled an inspection first, then produce an invoice to be paid in person/onsite, call 911 immediately, and have the police department follow up with the Fire Marshal Division for confirmation.
