Milford Senior Center Kicks Off National Senior Center Month with Mayoral Proclamation

The Milford Senior Center will continue its celebration with an Open House on Monday, September 15th, from 5–7 p.m.

Milford, CT — The Milford Senior Center launched its celebration of National Senior Center Month on Tuesday, September 2nd, with a special proclamation from Mayor Anthony Giannattasio. The event marked the beginning of a month-long acknowledgment of the vital role senior centers play in enriching the lives of older adults. Mayor Giannattasio joined members, staff, and volunteers at the center to recognize the contributions of the facility to the Milford community.

The proclamation highlighted the importance of senior centers as hubs of connection, wellness, and lifelong learning. National Senior Center Month, observed each September, celebrates the efforts of senior centers across the country in supporting older adults through programs that encourage independence, engagement, and overall well-being. This year’s theme, “Powering Possibilities: Flip the Script,” urges communities to challenge outdated perceptions of aging and recognize the dynamic role senior centers serve in fostering creativity, connection, and resilience.

“The Milford Senior Center is a hub for community and connection, offering an incredible array of daily programs and events. Members can enjoy affordable meals, local bus trips, and transportation to shops and doctor visits. It's an invaluable place for seniors to stay active, engaged, and social,” stated Mary Lou Bevvino, board member of the Milford Council on Aging (MCOA).

“They offer older adults a place to grow, connect, and thrive.” Benjamin D. Gettinger, Esq., also an MCOA board member, added, “I am delighted the City (of Milford) is recognizing the Milford Senior Center for all of its contributions to the community, especially our senior community. The Milford Senior Center has become the gold standard for senior centers around the state because of its outstanding activities, resources, and nutritional programs. The recognition is well-deserved.”

The Milford Senior Center will continue its celebration with an Open House on Monday, September 15th, from 5–7 p.m., inviting the public to explore its programs and meet the dedicated team behind its success. The event will include live music, a food demonstration, information about volunteer opportunities, tea time with social services, a sale in the Second Glance Shop, food trivia with Meals on Wheels and Milford Food Bank, cupcakes and conversation with executive director Leonora Rodriguez, demonstrations of Laughter Yoga, Zumba Gold, and Improv class. The event will also offer a free raffle to win a one-year free membership to four lucky winners. Membership for Milford residents begins at age 55, and annual membership is $25.00 and includes all fitness, recreation, and creative classes, transportation, and social services support.
