Obituary: Howard D. Carpenter, 84, of Milford

Howard, known as a modest and dutiful man of many interests, served in the U.S. Air Force and worked many years at Sikorsky Aircraft.

MILFORD, CT - (From Cody-White Funeral Home) Howard D. Carpenter, devoted husband of 58 years to Rita (LaBarge) Carpenter, passed away on August 12th.

Born on June 9, 1937 in Claremont, New Hampshire, Howard was the son of the late Brock D. Carpenter and Frances D. Carpenter.

Mr. Carpenter’s family includes his brother John, who resides in Charlottesville, VA with his wife Susan; his loving daughter Linda Frattini, who resides in Guilford, CT; and his son Scott Carpenter who, along with his wife Sue, resides in Milford, CT.

Howard is a proud Grandfather to his four grandchildren: AnneMarie, Ryan, Nicholas, and Jonathan.

An ‘Old Vermonter’ at heart, Mr. Carpenter grew up in Woodstock and graduated from Woodstock High in 1955. He continued his education and later graduated from East Coast Aero Tech as a Federally Licensed Aircraft & Engine Technician.

He went to work for Sikorsky Aircraft as a flight technician. Two years later, Howard joined the U.S. Air Force and served as a Crew Chief / Flight Engineer for the 8th Air Force Air Rescue and later as Air Rescue Service.

Honorably discharged, he returned to Sikorsky Aircraft and became a technical writer.

Over his 37 year career, Howard was involved in many projects related to helicopters. For nearly 20 years, he was associated with the Presidential Helicopter Program, in which he received recognition and appreciation for his support of Marine Helicopter Squadron One.

Howard also moonlighted as a police officer in Milford, CT from 1969-1974.

A modest and dutiful man of many interests, Howard enjoyed his children, grandchildren, golf, watercolor painting, corvettes, and riding motorcycles- of which he had many friends.

He was also a member of the American Legion, the Air Force Association, and the American Motorcycle Association.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America, 7 Mill Brook Road, P.O. Box 9517, Wilton, NH 03086-9517.
