'Outgoing, Inspiring, And Determined': Milford Star Student

We all know students who excel in academic, fine arts or volunteer service. Here's one local resident who is having an impact in Milford.

This submission comes from Katie Servas who nominated her friend Gemard, an 11th grader at Jonathan Law High School of Milford.

MILFORD, CT — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Katie Servas who nominated her friend Gemard, an 11th grader at Jonathan Law High School of Milford.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Gemard is an outgoing, inspiring, and determined individual who spends many afternoons volunteering at the Milford Public Library as a member of the Teen Advisory Group where he discusses issues that directly affect teens and their use of the library. He also serves as Vice President of the Keystone Club at the Boys and Girls Club where he helped bring the club its first-ever silver charter and national conference in history! Gemard is very involved in his community, always promoting and participating in non-profit events, working hard in his classes, and continuing to build strong relationships with his peers.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

One of his most recent accomplishments has been forming the Black Student Union at Jonathan Law High School. The BSU is a community-based club intended to be a comfortable space for black students at Law. He’s spent countless hours locating an advisor and time on events/activities for the club and Law. Some events the club has hosted include a schoolwide movie night, presentation night highlighting black culture (traditions, cultural appropriation, etc.), organization of a schoolwide Black History Month activity, and hosting an event with Yale’s current student body president who is the first Black woman to be in the role. The club has grown to be quite popular among the student body, as many testimonies express how the club’s community has made them feel more comfortable and welcome at Law. Gemard’s hard work and determination to create this club has allowed students to speak out about their culture, educate their peers, and support those around them.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Gemard!
