'Parking Lift' Concerns Doom Affordable Housing Proposal In Milford

A commissioner said "there is a safety concern adding this type of lift is used in bigger cities for parking."

MILFORD, CT — The city's Board of Police Commissioners has denied a proposal for an 8-unit affordable housing development, according to meeting minutes from the June meeting.

The proposal called for an 8 Unit Residential Rental Development at 17-19 Cherry St. Members expressed concerns over a parking lift, which is proposed as part of the project.

Special Permit – 8 Unit Residential Rental Development under 8-30g – 17-19 Cherry Street- A motion was made by Comm. David Rubenstein and seconded by Comm. John Mager to accept Traffic Division to deny request at this time for a noted discrepancy of concern.

Comm. Mager expressed his concern regarding the parking lift being considered in this building which he explained is an auto stacker.

Chrmn. Richard Smith reminded members this Commission’s purview is with regard to site lines.

Comm. Rubenstein added there is a safety concern adding this type of lift is used in bigger cities for parking.

Comm. Mager stated he is concerned about this type of apparatus being introduced into the city.

Sgt. Kranyak noted this issue is concerning for him as well. He explained in terms of site line, he has spoken to a traffic engineer pertaining to the intersection around the property and he will proceed with providing us data on that. He stated he was not too familiar with the “stacker”.

Comm. Mager stated he would like to see what the engineer has to say but he is very concerned about the possibility of injury to residents and he supports denying this until we learn more about it. Regarding site lines which is under our purview but this request is on the forefront of this apparatus.

Chrmn. Smith noted this is a new space that we have not discussed previously and it needs to be looked at more closely and requires further discussion from other city officials.

Motion carried unanimously to deny the request.
