Milford Public School’s plan to add “greeters” to the entrances of each of the lower schools has prompted the union representing the security guards at the schools to file a formal complaint with the state.
According to a report in the Connecticut Post, the AFSCME is contending that the new greeter positions are intended as a layer of security despite the fact that the employees will not be trained in emergency response.
During the initial budget discussions, Board of Education Chairman Tracy Casey stated that Police Chief Keith Mello was in favor of the greeters over posting officers in the elementary schools.
While the district intended to bring in an extra set of eyes, union representatives hold that security is the main focus behind the move and hiring greeters at a lower wage scale is a means of circumventing the union.
