Impaired Motorist Crashes Into Parked Vehicles, Building In Waterbury: PD

The driver is facing multiple charges, including operating under the influence, according to police.

WATERBURY, CT — A van smashed into several parked vehicles and a building Sunday night, according to police.

The driver of the van, Diego Quituizaca-Matailo, 28, of Waterbury, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, operating under suspension, and failure to drive in the proper lane.

Police spokesman Sgt. Joseph Morais said police were summoned to the scene around 7:17 p.m. Sunday.

Police said Quituizaca-Matailo was operating a white Ford Econoline van when he veered from the northbound lane and hit five vehicles parked in front of 1268 Thomaston Ave.

No one was inside the parked vehicles, which were all damaged, police said.

After hitting the vehicles, Quituizaca-Matailo’s van struck the building at 1268 Thomaston Ave., then came to a stop, police said.

The building sustained minor damage, and police said it remains structurally sound.

Quituizaca-Matailo and his passenger did not have any apparent injuries, and they both refused medical attention, according to police.

Officers on scene believed the driver showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol, according to Morais. Police said Quituizaca-Matailo failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody.
