Naugatuck YMCA Official Pushing Swim Safety for Children Campaign
The director of operations for the Naugatuck YMCA is running a marathon in an effort to raise awareness about the issue of swim safety.

NAUGATUCK, CT - The director of operations for the Naugatuck YMCA is taking it upon herself to run a marathon to try and raise awareness about water safety for children.
Sherri Beck has started a GoFundMe page. Here is what she says:
“26 Miles for 26 Children is my way to take action.I recently signed up for my first marathon scheduled on October 7th. Every summer as I train for a new challenge I am thrilled to see children playing outside.

“However, the thrill turns to concern far too often as I run by lakes, streams, rivers and ponds. I often see children near large bodies of water unattended. Usually between the ages of 10 to 14. That age where parents are beginning to allow some freedom. Parents tend to trust their children to make safe decision. Young people may not be aware of risks and safety measures in lakes and rivers. Many youth have never learned how to swim. My running by will not make a difference.
“Hopefully this will. My goal this summer is twofold. 1. Raise funds to send 26 children to swim safety classes. 2. Spread awareness for everyone to keep an eye on the children in our community. It takes a village to raise a child. Our community is a tight community, lets work together to keep an eye out and keep our children safe this summer. If you would like to sponsor a child the cost is $82.62 (This covers the cost of 7 swim classes and the cost of the fundraising tool)If a child is too much consider $26 for my 26 miles I will run.If you are unable to contribute financially I understand. I do however ask for you to share this post and keep your eyes open this summer.

“There is no time to wait. Summer is here and the children are out. Let's get them educated on water safety. I will get children into classes as soon as donations begin. Thank you everyone. I look forward to running for a reason.”
