Naugatuck Snowstorm Central: Temps Plummeting [Updated]

Update as of 5 p.m. on Jan. 3:

Temperatures in Naugatuck are expected to plummet tonight into tomorrow to as low as five below zero. Winds will diminish a bit, but may still gust up to 20 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

"Wind chills below zero could lead to frostbite or hypothermia for anyone exposed to the cold," the weather service warns in a special statement. 

On Saturday, temperatures will climb back into the 20s, but it will still feel like below zero with the wind chill.

And on Sunday into Monday, a wintry mix consisting mostly of rain is in the forecast.

Update as of 11:15 a.m. on Jan. 3:

A reminder that Naugatuck's sanitation collection is running one day late, through Saturday, due to the New Year's holiday. 

Recycling collection has been further delayed because of equipment breakdowns. The recycling truck went offline Thursday at mid-morning, approximately one-third the way through Wednesday's route. "We expect to resume collecting recycling this afternoon and continuing through the weekend. We hope to be back on schedule Monday morning," according to Emily Rau, from Naugatuck Public Works.

Rau also noted that trash collection is currently being done by the two old-style rear loading trucks. "Collecting trash manually today isn't an easy task given the snow, wind, and extreme cold," she said. "Crews will not be able to empty carts that are buried in snow banks, so if at all possible residents are being asked to keep their carts free of snow." 

There will be no school in Naugatuck today due to the snow.

Update as of 1:23 p.m. on Jan. 2:

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has ordered the partial opening of the State Emergency Operations Center.

Students' winter break got an extension this morning, Jan. 2, when the Naugatuck Public School district cancelled school due to the impending snow storm.

The storm is expected to dump up to a foot of snow over the next 36-48 hours, according to forecasts.

The Naugatuck Historical Society will be closed today and tomorrow, Jan. 3, due to the storm.

Snow Plowing

Naugatuck's streets are plowed with a combination of Borough trucks and private contractors, according to the town's website. Each section of town has a crew assigned to it, and trucks are always dispatched to the hills and to the areas of town with higher elevations first, as it begins to snow.

Sidewalk Maintenance

The Public Works Department website reminds residents that they are responsible for shoveling all sidewalks in front of their property. "Residents must clear their sidewalks within six hours of the completion of the storm. Residents will be charged if Borough crews have to clear sidewalks in front of personal property."

Naugatuck Park & Recreation Department is only responsible for sidewalks adjacent to Borough property.

Snow Shoveling

Borough ordinance prohibits residents from shoveling or plowing snow into the street from their property.

To report snowy/slippery conditions, residents can call the Public Work's Office at 203-720-7071 Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

After those hours, during a winter storm, call the Public Works Garage directly at 203-720-7070. If there is a winter storm emergency and no crews have been dispatched, call the Police Department at 203-720-5222.
