Possible Artist Space in Downtown Naugatuck's Future

A renowned architect wants to create a space for artists in the borough.

Joseph Migani, of O’Riodan Migani Architects in Seymour, has asked Naugatuck for an option to renovate the former General DataComm World Headquarters located at 6 Rubber Ave., the Republican-American reports.

Migani, an architect who has renovated many buildings throughout the state, wants to create a destination for artists in the borough’s downtown area.

The Naugatuck Economic Development Corp. voted unanimously to send a positive referral of the project to the Board of Mayor and Burgesses, which can give Migani the rights to develop the property that is owned by the borough, the paper reports.

According to the paper, if the project is approved, Migani plans on constructing 96 studio-style affordable housing units on the third and fourth floor of the building and an office space on the second floor. The first floor will be used for parking, lobbies for the housing and office space and commercial space.

The option the Board of Mayor and Burgesses will be asked to approve states that the cost of the project should not exceed $2 million, the paper reports.
