Announces New Senior Officers and Highlights Recent Activities
Fairfield County, Connecticut – June 1st, 2024 – The Captain David Hawley Society of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) is delighted to announce the recent election of its Senior (Adult) Officers. Bruce Mitchell has been elected as the Senior Society President, Sara Zawoiski as Senior Treasurer and Mary Bendix as Senior Registrar. These adult leaders will guide the young members in their mission to honor American heritage and promote patriotic education.The members officers for the Captain David Hawley Society include Aedan Mitchell as Society President, Dane Mitchell as Society Chaplain, Rhiannon Mitchell as Society Historian, Rune Mitchell as Society Treasurer, Eleanor Zawoiski as Society Recording Secretary, and Michael Zawoiski as Society Registrar.
The Children of the American Revolution, founded in 1895, is the nation’s oldest patriotic youth organization. Open to individuals under the age of 22 who are descendants of patriots of the American Revolution, C.A.R. fosters a love of history, a spirit of patriotism, and an appreciation for the sacrifices of those who fought for American independence. Through various activities and community service projects, members learn about the importance of their heritage and develop leadership skills.
The Captain David Hawley Society is named in honor of Captain David Hawley, a distinguished patriot from Fairfield, Connecticut. Captain Hawley played a significant role during the American Revolution as a privateer and naval officer, contributing to the American cause through his involvement in the capture of British ships and the defense of Long Island Sound. The society perpetuates his legacy by educating youth about his contributions and the broader history of the American Revolution.

The Captain David Hawley Society, C.A.R., founded in 1922, has a rich history of promoting historical education and community service. In April 1959, it was voted the most outstanding society in the nation at the national C.A.R. convention in Washington. The society has continued to be active this past year, hosting events such as a tour and meeting at the historic Mather Homestead in Darien, participating in Wilton's Scarecrow Competition, and honoring veterans during the Wilton Veteran’s Day ceremony. They also participated in a Doughnut Social at The American Legion, Post 68, created valentines for veterans, participated in a state conference in Southbury, and engaged in the Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest and the Sgt. Moses Adams Memorial Middle School Brochure Contest, sponsored by the Sons of the American Revolution (S.A.R.). The society continues to foster community spirit and historical awareness through these activities.
