Fire Breaks Out In Shed At New Canaan Home: FD

Fire officials said a closed gate at the end of the home's driveway delayed crews as they tried to extinguish the fire.

NEW CANAAN, CT — A fire that broke out in a New Canaan home's shed early Tuesday morning was extinguished by firefighters despite delays caused by a closed gate, according to fire officials.

In a news release, Fire Chief Albe Bassett said a structure fire was reported at a Country Club Road home around 12:45 a.m. by a neighbor on Lambert Road who saw the blaze from their home.

When crews arrived, they found a 10 feet by 30 feet shed on fire about 1,000 feet down the driveway, Bassett said.

Firefighters used a hose line to bring the blaze under control within a few minutes, Bassett said.

A water supply line was laid from a hydrant on Country Club Road, and the property caretaker was at the house at the time of the fire, according to Bassett. No injuries were reported.

New Canaan fire crews received assistance from Wilton and Norwalk firefighters, as well as New Canaan police and the community emergency response team, Bassett said.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, according to Bassett.

Bassett also noted a closed gate at the end of the home's driveway delayed crews responding to the fire.

"Residents should call 911 immediately when there is an emergency and ensure the fire department has access to the property," Bassett said in a news release.

Residents can provide an access code to driveway gates by creating a Community Connect account, Bassett said.

"In addition to gate codes," Bassett said, "residents can put vital information such as your family's meeting place, if there are any family members that need special assistance or if there are pets in the house. The firefighters will see this information while responding to the incident and allow us to work more efficiently to protect your life and property."
