Holiday Season Safety Tips Provided By New Canaan Fire Marshal's Office

The New Canaan Fire Marshal's office is offering residents a number of tips to prevent home fires during this holiday season.

NEW CANAAN, CT — The New Canaan Fire Marshal's office is offering residents a number of tips to prevent home fires during this holiday season.

According to the New Canaan Fire Marshal Facebook page, flammable seasonal decorations, dry Christmas trees and more time spent in the kitchen all contribute to a higher number of home fires during the holidays.

The following holiday season safety tips were provided by the New Canaan Fire Marshal's office:

  • Keep your live Christmas trees watered and do not allow them to dry out completely.
  • Turn off holiday lights at night or when you leave the house.
  • Don't overload extension cords.
  • Keep candles away from flammable materials and make sure to blow them out when you leave the room or go to bed; consider using flameless candles.
  • Make sure to have working smoke alarms close to where anyone may be sleeping.
