HSUS Board Member Underwrites Free Presentation on Area Wildlife

Cathy Kangas gives a special presentation on New Canaan wildlife Tuesday, Oct. 25 at New Canaan Nature Center.

A representative from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) will give a special presentation about living with wildlife in New Canaan on Tuesday, October 25th at the New Canaan Nature Center, 144 Oenoke Ridge, Route 124 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Laura Simon, a Wildlife Ecologist for HSUS, who specializes in helping communities resolve urban wildlife issues will address how New Canaanites can co-exist in a compassionate, humane manner with wildlife including bears, coyotes, deer, raccoons and other animals. Also on hand to answer questions about co-existing with wildlife in New Canaan will be Allyson Halm, the town’s Animal Control Officer.

Some cities in Fairfield County have experienced an increase in coyote sightings. Ms. Simon will address what to do if a coyote gets too close. She will advise being loud and large, a form of hazing, that includes waving your arms over your head and making loud noises. In addition, New Canaan residents should remove accessible garbage or compost, pet food and spilled bird seed around feeders. Always walk your dog on a leash and bring cats indoors. If you are caring for community cats, feed them at the same time every day and then immediately remove the food.

HSUS is against using leghold traps because they have proven to me ineffective. Trapping is not only cruel, but indiscriminate. Birds and other wildlife can become ensnarled in these traps as well as family pets.
