New Canaan High School was ranked the second-best public high school in the state (and No. 85 in the nation) in a study published by Niche.com, a website that ranks schools across the nation.

Coming in ahead of New Canaan was Weston High School (No. 1). Rankings of other schools in the area: Staples High School in Westport (No. 3), Darien (No. 4), Ridgefield (No. 6), Wilton (No. 7) and Greenwich (No. 8).

The study graded and ranked schools after looking into these factors: academics, health and safety, teachers, extracurricular activities (for all four of which, New Canaan received an “A+” grade), sports and fitness, resources and facilities (for these, New Canaan received a grade of “A”), a parent/student survey (New Canaan scored 4.3 out of a possible 5.0), and “student culture & diversity” in which New Canaan bombed with a ”C+”.

Niche says the ”student culture & diversity” factor “incorporates statistics and student, alumni, and parent surveys regarding student culture and diversity at the school.”

The study ranked 100 high schools in Connecticut and many more elsewhere. Among the high schools that the website ranked the 100 best in the country were Weston (No. 84), New Canaan (No. 85) and Westport (No. 94), the only schools from Connecticut on that list.

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that only Weston and New Canaan appeared on the top-100 rankings. Not so. Westport was there at No. 94.
