Man Charged With Stealing $10K from New Canaan Mother-In-Law

A Norwalk man was turned over to New Canaan authorities on larceny and forgery charges after being picked up in his city of residence while skipping out on court there, police said Monday.

Rory Bernier, 49, of James Street, was charged in January 2012 in the theft of almost , who lived on St. John's Place. According to police, Bernier endorsed four checks taken from his mother-in-law totaling $9,603 and made out to cash.

New Canaan Police went to the state Superior Court in Norwalk to serve a warrant after receiving word Bernier was supposed to be there on unrelated charges. According to authorities, Bernier never showed up during his scheduled time.

Bernier was, however, picked up by Norwalk authorities in the vicinity of the courthouse later Wednesday afternoon. He was eventually transported to New Canaan and served with a warrant for third-degree larceny and three counts of third-degree forgery.

Bernier posted his $10,000 bond and was given a court date of March 26, police said
