New Canaan 2023 Election Voter Guide: Candidates, Polling Places

NEW CANAAN, CT — On Nov. 7, New Canaan residents cast their votes for several key municipal positions.

Contested races include: first selectman, the town council and school board.

Polls in Connecticut are open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. You can use the Secretary of State’s website to find your polling place. Voters who are in line by 8 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

Connecticut also allows for Election Day registration at designated centers in each town. People must be registered by 8 p.m. in order to vote using Election Day registration.

To receive your absentee ballot, complete and sign an application and return it to your Town Clerk, or you can request an absentee ballot online.

First Selectman, Selectman, Town Clerk and Town Treasurer

In New Canaan, Amy Murphy Carroll, a Democrat, is running for first selectman against Dionna Carlson, a Republican. For selectman, Steve Karl, a Republican, is running unopposed. Claudia Weber, a Republican, is running unopposed for town clerk. Andrew Brooks, a Republican, is running unopposed for town treasurer.

Board of Education (Full Term)

For Board of Education, you'll vote for up to four people. Democratic candidates include: Lauren Connolly Nussbaum and Brendan Hayes. Republican candidates are: Matt Campbell, Matt Wexler and Lara Kelly. Giacomo Landi is a petitioning candidate.

Board of Education (2-Year Term)

Joshua Kaye is the Democratic candidate to fill a two-year vacancy on the Board of Education. Hugo Alves is the Republican candidate.

Board of Assessment Appeals

For the Board of Assessment Appeals, you'll vote for up to two people. Republican candidates include: Kevin McIntosh and Tony Calanca. John Matz is the Democratic candidate.

Town Council

For town council, you'll vote for up to six people. On the ballot are Democrats Jennifer Zonis and Janet Leung Fonss. The Republicans on the ballot include: Michael Mauro, Maria Naughton, Cristina Ross and Eric Thunem.

Constables

For constables, you'll vote for up to four people. Democratic candidates include: Susan Edmands, Nick Mitrakis, Edward Vollmer and Jordan Cerbone. Republican candidates include: Alberto Gonzalez, Robert Naughton, Greg Pepe and Jill Guzzetti.
