New Canaan CARES to Host Free NARCAN Training for the Community
Learn to Use NARCAN and Help Save Lives Amid National Surge in Fentanyl-Laced Drugs

New Canaan CARES, the state-sponsored Local Prevention Council (LPC) for the Town of New Canaan, will host a free NARCAN training session for caregivers and community members on Tuesday, June 3rd at 9:30 AM in the Tate Room at the New Canaan Library.
This essential training is designed for parents, guardians, and caregivers to equip them with life-saving skills to combat the growing opioid crisis. Participants will learn how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose, how to properly administer Narcan (naloxone), and how to talk to their families about the risks of fentanyl and opioid misuse.
“With the alarming rise in fentanyl contamination in illicit drugs, knowing how to recognize an overdose and administer NARCAN has never been more important,” said Maureen Asiel, Education Program Manager at New Canaan CARES. “This training could save a life—possibly someone you know.”

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid up to 50 times stronger than heroin, is increasingly found in counterfeit pills and other illicit substances—often without the user’s knowledge. The increased availability and use of NARCAN has been shown to reduce overdose fatalities and save lives in communities nationwide. New Canaan CARES is stepping up with community-based education and prevention efforts.
As the Local Prevention Council, New Canaan CARES plays a vital role in the town’s public health and wellness infrastructure. CARES organizes and facilitates the New Canaan Coalition—a collaboration of affected families, community organizations, concerned citizens, faith-based groups, first responders, government, the recovery community, schools and youth organizations, and treatment providers. Together, they are committed to enhancing the lives of New Canaan youth and families through education, prevention, and positive programming.
The overarching goals of LPCs include increasing public awareness of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention while stimulating the development and implementation of local prevention activities—primarily focused on youth.
