WETHERSFIELD, CT — A midseason 6-0 loss to top-ranked New Canaan did not deter Wilton from giving the Rams a battle in the Class L field hockey finals Saturday at Wethersfield High School. In fact, the Warriors netted the first goal of the game, putting New Canaan in the rare position of trailing.

A tying goal less than a minute before intermission put the Rams back on track, and a pair of fourth-quarter tallies cemented the team's first state championship in five years.

Amelia Abud scored for Wilton just under seven minutes into the second quarter, assisted by Elizabeth Kendra. It appeared the Warriors would head into halftime with the lead, but Isabella Schuh scored, assisted by Molly Mitchell, knotted the score 37 seconds before the break.

Neither team found the cage in the third quarter, but Schuh garnered her second score of the game with 10:31 left in regulation time to push the Rams ahead. Mitchell added an insurance goal with 4:39 left.

New Canaan goalkeeper Grace Gilman earned the win, making four saves. Wilton netminder Eva Filliponi stopped seven shots.
