New Canaan fire officials encourage residents to ring in 2025 by prioritizing fire prevention and focusing on their health and safety.

NEW CANAAN, CT — As we officially enter the new year, the New Canaan Fire Marshal's Office asks residents to "ring in fire safety" and resolve to make their homes safer in 2025.

In a Facebook post this week, fire officials noted residents can start the new year off right by focusing on their health and safety.

"Did you know that most fire deaths in the U.S. occur at home? This year, the New Canaan Fire Department encourages you to prioritize fire prevention to protect your family," the post reads.

The following tips were provided by the New Canaan Fire Marshal's Office:

  • Check Your Smoke Alarms: Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home, in bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Test alarms monthly and replace them every 10 years.
  • Practice Cooking Safety: Stay in the kitchen when frying, broiling, or boiling to prevent kitchen fires.
  • Protect Kids from Fire Hazards: Keep lighters and matches locked away and out of reach.
