The Cathy Kangas Foundation in New Canaan will pay all adoption fees at Bridgeport Animal Control as part of an initiative later this month.

NEW CANAAN, CT — The Cathy Kangas Foundation in New Canaan will pay all adoption fees at Bridgeport Animal Control on Friday, June 28, and Saturday, June 29, as part of its "Free the Shelters" initiative.

According to a news release provided by the foundation, the event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The shelter is located at 236 Evergreen Street in Bridgeport.

Launched in 2016 by Cathy Kangas, Free the Shelters has saved more than 10,000 animals in the United States and Canada by paying adoption fees, according to the foundation.

"I love working with Bridgeport Animal Control," Kangas said in a news release. "They care deeply about the animals they care for and are committed to having them adopted. Let freedom ring this Independence Day for the more than 30 animals in Bridgeport!"

During the Bridgeport event, no appointments are needed. Applications can be completed on site.

Potential pet parents must bring documents for home ownership or a notarized letter from their landlord stating they can have a pet. There will be a meet and greet with all available animals with all dogs currently in the home along with any children, according to the foundation.

Pets do not go home on the same day. Bridgeport Animal Control reserves the right to deny adoptions, according to the foundation.

All animals are spayed/neutered/vaccinated and microchipped before leaving the shelter. All adoption and application procedures still apply, according to the foundation.

"We thank the Cathy Kangas Foundation for Animals for once again holding a Free the Shelters event here," Jennifer Merenda, the chief animal control officer of Bridgeport Animal Control, said in a news release. "Finding forever homes for our animals is our number one priority. She has enabled us to do this."
